Day care procedures Back and Neck pain

How We do Minimal invasive spine surgery

Day care procedures, also known as outpatient or ambulatory procedures, are medical interventions that do not require an overnight stay in a hospital. These procedures are often performed in specialized clinics or surgical centers. Some pain relief procedures, such as nerve root blocks and facet joint blocks, can be conducted on a day care basis. Here’s an overview of these two common pain management interventions:

  1. Nerve Root Block:

    • Purpose: Nerve root block, also known as a selective nerve root block or epidural steroid injection, is a procedure aimed at providing pain relief by targeting inflamed or irritated spinal nerves.
    • Procedure:
      • The patient may lie on their stomach or back, depending on the targeted area.
      • The skin is cleaned and numbed with a local anesthetic.
      • Using fluoroscopic guidance (real-time X-ray), a needle is precisely guided to the affected nerve root.
      • A mixture of a local anesthetic and a corticosteroid (anti-inflammatory medication) is injected to reduce inflammation and alleviate pain.
    • Conditions Treated: Nerve root blocks are commonly used to manage pain associated with herniated discs, spinal stenosis, and other conditions affecting spinal nerves.
  1. Facet Joint Block:

    • Purpose: Facet joint block, also known as a facet injection or medial branch block, is a procedure targeting the small joints located between each vertebra in the spine. It aims to reduce pain arising from these joints.
    • Procedure:
      • The patient may be positioned face down or face up, depending on the targeted facet joint.
      • The skin is cleaned and numbed with a local anesthetic.
      • Using fluoroscopic guidance, a needle is guided to the facet joint or the nerves (medial branches) that transmit pain signals from the joint.
      • A mixture of a local anesthetic and a corticosteroid is injected into the joint or around the nerves to reduce inflammation and relieve pain.
    • Conditions Treated: Facet joint blocks are often used to manage pain related to facet joint arthritis or injury.

Day Care Aspects:

  • Both nerve root blocks and facet joint blocks are typically performed on an outpatient basis, allowing patients to return home on the same day.
  • The procedures are relatively quick, and patients are usually observed for a short period after the intervention to ensure there are no immediate complications.
  • Patients are typically advised to avoid strenuous activities for a short period after the procedure.

Aftercare:

  • After the procedure, patients may experience some relief immediately due to the local anesthetic, and longer-term relief may come from the corticosteroid.
  • It’s common for patients to rest for a short period after the procedure, but they can usually resume normal activities the next day.
  • Patients are often provided with post-procedure instructions, including any restrictions on activities and potential side effects to watch for.

It’s essential for individuals considering these procedures to consult with their healthcare provider or a pain management specialist to determine the most appropriate course of action based on their specific condition and symptoms.
